Choose the AI
- 1Open Settings › AI.
- 2Pick a provider: Anthropic (Claude), OpenAI, Google Gemini, OpenRouter, Ollama or LM Studio on your Mac, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint.
- 3Paste your API key. It's saved in your Mac's Keychain and only sent to that provider.
- 4Click Test Connection.
A local model through Ollama or LM Studio costs nothing and keeps everything on your Mac. Larger hosted models write better widgets.
Describe the widget
- 1Click New Widget with AI in Settings › AI, or Create with AI in the Widget Gallery.
- 2Say what it should show and how it should look, for example: "A countdown to 1 June with a progress ring, in my theme's colours."
- 3Kakuchi builds it and shows a preview. Ask for changes in the same window until it's right.
- 4Add it to your desktop.
Change it later
Right-click the widget and choose Change with AI. Say what to change; the rest stays.
What the widget is allowed to do
Previews never run commands. A widget that runs commands, uses the network or reads files lists that in its install sheet and needs your approval first.
Questions
- Do I pay Kakuchi for the AI?
- No. You use your own provider and pay them whatever they charge, or nothing with a local model.
- Do I need to know how to code?
- No. Widgets are JSX files you can open and edit (right-click › Open Code), but you never have to.
